SUMMARY:Kitsap Youth Rally for Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Tue.\, Mar. 19\, 2024\, 8am–12:30pm\n\n\n\n\nOlympic College Bremerton Campus\n\nBldg. 10 (Bremer Student Center)\n\n\n\n\n\nOlympic College is proud to host the Kitsap Youth Rally for Human Rights on March 19. This year’s school host is Central Kitsap High School. Over 250 students and adult leaders will attend. \nThis year’s theme is “Honor Your Past\, Forge Your Future.” CKHS rally planners want to acknowledge how far so many movements for inclusion and equality have come and to focus on empowering youth to continue to fight to achieve those goals. \nWhat’s a Youth Rally? It’s a gathering of students from all over the Kitsap Peninsula\, with music and student-led workshops about social justice and human rights. The Rally is sponsored by Kitsap Safe Schools Network and West Sound Academy. \nWhat is the schedule for the Rally? On-site check-in of pre-registered student groups starts at 8 am in Bldg. 10 (BSC) at Olympic College. The programming starts at 8:50 am with three breakout sessions and snacks\, and the rally ends at 1:20 pm. The lunch period is exclusively devoted to giving time for students to browse outreach tables from community organizations. \nFor more information\, email Susan Trower\, Youth Rally Coordinator\, at strower@westsoundacademy.org. \n\n\nTue.\, Mar. 19\, 2024\, 8am – 12:30pm\n\n\nTo request an accommodation\, visit our Accessibility & Accommodations webpage. Please provide advance notice to ensure we are able to grant your request.

SUMMARY:BUSY BEES: MAKIN’ LIFE SWEET
DESCRIPTION:Join our volunteer beekeeper\, Charles Schafer\, and IslandWood naturalists for an afternoon to delight the mind\, senses and heart in our beautiful garden setting. We will hear stories and sing songs about bees\, have a honey tasting\, and also listen to a fun and lively presentation all about the buzz in your neighborhood. \nAfter learning about bees\, we will get to build our own pollinator hotels! Your ticket price includes everything you need to get started to attract and support native pollinators in your own backyard. They are an incredibly docile and ecologically valuable species\, worthy of our attention and support. We’ll even have some live bees to meet\, for those that want to hold a “baby” bee! \n\n\nTHINGS TO KNOW \n\nThis class is rain or shine\, so please dress in layers and always bring a rain layer\, gloves and hat at this time of year. Our Garden Classroom is a covered space\, so we’ll be dry for our beekeeping lesson and craft no matter what.\nIn addition to learning and seeing the bees\, we will also have hands-on time with friendly mason bees. We will be sending you home with the supplies needed to invite mason bees to your own backyard\, balcony or “back 40.”\nThough we have a low-risk (tremendously low) of being stung by any garden insect\, if you or a family member have a known allergy to bees\, this is not the program for you.\nDue to the content and pace of this program\, we are listing the suggested age of participation as 5 years and up.\nInfants (under one year) worn in a baby backpack\, sling\, or baby-wearing device or in a stroller and attended by the caregiver are also welcome with you\, no ticket needed for an infant.\nPlease remember our campus policy is ‘no dogs unless they are a service animal.’\nWe always cap off our programs with a sweet treat of our homemade cookies too\, which we will enjoy at the end during a storytime.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis class will be led by our Sr. Naturalist\, Christina Woolf\, our Garden Manager\, Mel Church\, and our volunteer beekeeper\, Charles Schafer. Christina and Charles have been working together for over a decade\, and we can’t wait to reveal the secret life of bees to you! They sure are sweet. \nAge: All \nPrice: $10-$30 (Register Here)

SUMMARY:AFTERNOON ON THE TRAILS
DESCRIPTION:IslandWood’s trail systems will be open this day only for your self-guided exploration. Hike leisurely down the Spine Trail and traverse the ravine on a suspension bridge. How many species of ferns can you spot from the bridge? (our staff will have the answer!). Head up the Cemetery Trail and peek in the Mill Worker’s Cabin or head south to explore the more elusive “Lower Loop Trail” full of mossy wonders\, maidenhair ferns\, and hooty owls. Heading back to campus\, take the Spine Trail north and weave around the cattail marsh\, stopping at the Bird Blind to observe waterfowl and other wildlife. Both treehouses and our Forest Canopy Tower will be open for your visit\, too! \nWe’ll have maps for you so you can find your way around and will be happy to suggest a route that is suitable for your family and abilities. \nIf you’ve come before\, we welcome you back again.  There is always something new to see every season! \n\nAll ages welcome!\nBring a picnic or early dinner if you like\, pack it in – pack it out.  Leave No Trace.\nPlease no dogs unless they are a service animal\, thank you.\nSome of our trails accommodate strollers and wheelchairs\, for more information please ask our Greeters for the best routes to accommodate your party size and abilities upon arrival.\n\nYour health and safety\, as well as that of our staff\, is our first priority.
